Developments in mobile technologies are paving the way for more advanced, efficient traffic management

The development of digital and mobile technologies has revolutionized the way we live. Mobile devices such as personal computers, smartphones and tablets make it easier than ever for businesses and employees to communicate with co-workers, customers and vendors, without the need to be tied to a single location.

The need for systems to be accessed from anywhere is becoming a necessity – both in general and in our industry. In response to the growing demand for mobile accessibility, Peek Traffic has developed Spinnaker, a web-based ATMS (advanced traffic management system) software. The system enables users to access real-time traffic data, and monitor and manage traffic from anywhere, enabling them to quickly respond to unexpected traffic issues.

Modern engineering

Spinnaker is modular, scalable and multijurisdictional. It supports the latest National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) standards, enabling small and large cities to integrate a variety of intelligent transportation subsystems such as intersection control, travel times, adaptive traffic control, CCTV, incident detection and dynamic message signs, among others.

Spinnaker has been designed to provide users with a user-friendly and intuitive interface. This interface is supported by HTML5 and Javascript, enabling it to be viewed through a web browser on a number of different mobile devices and operating systems, including Windows, OS X, Android, iOS and Linux. The system uses a single GIS basemap, allowing for seamless scrolling and zooming of map displays just like any other online mapping tool. It also provides users with a clear visual display at all zoom levels without overlapping or hiding device indicators. It features easy configuration of intersections, a layer manager to select and filter the devices that are viewable on the map, and a feature for monitoring configured alarms.

Since Spinnaker is web-based, users can access the system from any connected mobile device without having to install any kind of local application, unlike most of the current ATMS solutions that are available on the market today.

Flexible functionality

In addition to Spinnaker, Peek has also developed a web server application that enables authorized users to remotely access and configure Peek’s line of ATCs through any mobile device connected to the network running a compatible browser, such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Apple Safari. This feature gives users the flexibility to connect to the controller without having to leave their vehicles on those hot summer or cold winter days.

Spinnaker is the latest generation of Peek’s line of central software system products, which have been installed in more than 50 cities managing over 5,000 intersections across the USA, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.
